Decoration Day 2013

A motion was made at a church conference in February 1912 to have Decoration Day on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May. That tradition is still honored today over 100 years later. The event has changed over the years but it is the largest single day event at Stoney Point today. It is a family reunion of sorts, it is a time to reflect and remember loved ones, it is a time to enjoy fellowship over a meal and it is a time to conduct the business affairs of the members.

Decoration Day 2013 was a milestone event that was well attended to celebrate the renovation of the exterior of the church. New siding was installed, the original wood windows were replaced or repaired and a new concrete porch was installed.

Although not an official count. More than 50 folks decorated graves and attended the annual meeting for the Cemetery Association. The business meeting commenced at 10:00 A.M. and concluded by 11:30 when Brother Morris gave an uplifting an informative talk on the history of cemeteries. He also reminded us of our Almighty Savior's place in our lives.

We concluded the morning's activities with singing led by Teresa Airhart at the piano. At noon everyone joined in a potluck lunch that included a variety of home cooked favorites. And there was plenty of dessert for more than one helping! By the time everyone's belly was full the afternoon entertainment commenced.

For our afternoon entertainment, Copper Canyon provided gospel music and singing for more than an hour for everyone's enjoyment. Kids were dancing, while the rest had a foot stomping good time.

Copper Canyon is a premier bluegrass band in the DFW metroplex. They are well known for their tight harmonies and great picking. They have made a name for themselves by working hard and providing quality music to audiences across the state of Texas and Oklahoma.
